It is an ogy or metaphor for our soul which is here to find God. The knight is our searcher-pilgrim that goes after it like an adventure. The knight eventually finds his shadow who says, the knight realizes, the gold is in the valley of shadows, or is nothing, and by finding nothing and becoming a shadow and nothing, we find Everything, or El Dorado, God.
