Are Liberal States Better Off Financially?

Liberals tell everyone how much better and smarter they are that dumb ol' Texans, like me. Maybe it's just me, but liberal cities and states seem to be a little "financially challenged". Detroit is pretty liberal and houses there can be bought for less than the price of a Happy Meal. Is it really possible to spend more than you make, or is that something a dumb ol' Texan would say?
