Anyone played Metroid the other M - is it ok for a 12 yo?

My son is really wanting this game, he has the money but I'm not sure if he should get it. Usually he plays Spyro or Mario Bro. so I'm not sure about this one. It says Teen but he says it doesn't have gory stuff in it. Is it ok for a preteen?
