If my rented home caught on fire, should I pursue a case against the landlord?

Long story short, my girlfriend and I moved into this great starter home for a rent of only $425 a month. In the process of moving in we were keeping in contact with the lady who rented the home out to us (not the owner) and kept in touch about the few things that concerned us including the fact that we couldn't turn the propane gas on because there was a leak in the gas line. There was many problems with the home that was starting to concern us to the point where we were thinking of looking for another place. Not even living there a week we had an electrical fire involving faulty wiring and we lost everything. Thankfully my girlfriend and our 3 year old daughter are still alive but it could have taken all of our lives. We did not purchase renters insurance for the home yet but we feel that there may be a case against the landlord that should be pursued. What are everyones thoughts about this?
